Assam is a state situated in northeastern region of India, situated south of the eastern Himalayas along the Brahmaputra and Barak River valleys. Assam covers an area of 78,438 km2 (30,285 sq mi). The state is bordered by Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh to the north; Nagaland and Manipur.

Assam is known for Assam tea and Assam silk. Assam state was the first site for oil drilling in Asia. Assam has conserved the one-horned Indian rhinoceros from near extinction, along with the wild water buffalo ,various species of Asiatic birds, and provides one of the last wild habitats for the Asian elephant. Barak River

The Assam Barak river is a 900 km long river flowing through the states of Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Assam in India and into the Bay of Bengal via Bangladesh. Of the 900 km, 524 km is in India, 31 km on Indo Bangladesh and the rest is in Bangladesh. The navigable portion of Barak River in India, the 121km stretch between Lakhipur and Bhanga has been declared as National Waterway 16, (NW-16) in the year 2016. The river drains an area of 52,000 sq. km, of which 41723 sq.km lies in India which is nearly 1.38% of the total geographical area of the country.
